What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy – sometimes called “talk therapy” – is a confidential, evidence-based conversation between you and a trained mental health professional. Its purpose is to help you understand your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and to develop healthier ways of responding to the challenges in your life.

In individual psychotherapy, you meet one-on-one with your therapist. The relationship itself is part of the work – it offers a steady, non-judgmental space where you can be honest about what is happening inside you, often more openly than you can be anywhere else.

Psychotherapy is regulated in Ontario by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO). All clinicians at PsyToronto are licensed members in good standing.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about individual psychotherapy in Toronto.

What is the difference between psychotherapy and counselling?

The terms overlap and are often used interchangeably. In Ontario, ‘psychotherapy’ is a regulated controlled act – meaning psychotherapists are licensed and accountable to the CRPO. Counselling can be more general and is sometimes shorter-term and focused on specific life concerns.

How long does psychotherapy take?

It depends on your goals. Some clients work through a specific concern in 8-12 sessions; others continue for many months or years for ongoing growth. We discuss timelines transparently and review progress regularly.

Is psychotherapy covered by insurance in Ontario?

Sessions with our registered psychotherapists and psychologists are typically covered by extended health benefits. We provide receipts for direct reimbursement. Coverage amounts and limits vary by plan.

Do I need a referral to see a psychotherapist?

No referral is required. You can book directly with us. Some insurance plans may request a doctor’s note for reimbursement – check with your provider.

Can I switch therapists if it is not the right fit?

Absolutely. The therapeutic relationship matters deeply. If it is not the right fit, we will help you transition to another clinician at PsyToronto – no awkwardness, no judgment.

Is psychotherapy confidential?

Yes – strictly. Your information is protected by PHIPA (Ontario’s health privacy law) and the professional ethics of our regulatory colleges. There are rare legal exceptions (e.g., risk of harm) which your therapist will explain in your first session.
